Let’s make Oscar predictions!

If you know me, you know that a sizable portion of my life revolves around awards season.  Back in August, I made some predictions for what movies could possibly be nominated for Academy Awards come Oscar time.  With the Critic’s Choice Awards behind us and the Golden Globe Awards this weekend, awards season is in full swing, so this seems like a good time to make some updated predictions.  Below, I’ve made predictions for nominees and winners in all the main categories, and winners in all the other categories with the exception of live-action, animated, and documentary short.  Note that these are the movies I think will be nominated/win, not necessarily the ones I want to or believe should win.

Best Picture*

  • “Moonlight”
  • “La La Land”- WINNER
  • “Manchester by the Sea”
  • “Jackie”
  • “Fences”
  • “Hell or High Water”
  • “Hacksaw Ridge”
  • “Arrival”
  • “Lion”

*”Sully” could sneak in here instead of “Arrival” or “Lion.” But much of the hype for that movie seems to have died down.

Best Director*

  • Damien Chazelle, “La La Land”- WINNER
  • Barry Jenkins, “Moonlight”
  • Kenneth Lonergan, “Manchester by the Sea”
  • Denzel Washington, “Fences”
  • David Mackenzie, “Hell or High Water”

*Mel Gibson very well could be nominated in this category instead of Washington or Mackenzie. But I kind of think the Academy hates him.

Best Actor

  • Denzel Washington, “Fences”
  • Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge”
  • Joel Edgerton, “Loving”
  • Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea”- WINNER
  • Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”

  • Ben Foster, “Hell or High Water”

Best Supporting Actress:

  • Naomie Harris, “Moonlight”
  • Viola Davis, “Fences”- WINNER
  • Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea”
  • Nicole Kidman, “Lion”
  • Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures”

Best Animated Feature:

  • “Zootopia”- WINNER
  • “Moana”
  • “Kubo and the Two Strings”
  • “Finding Dory”
  • “Sing”

Best Original Screenplay: “La La Land”

Best Adapted Screenplay: “Fences”

Best Documentary Feature: “O.J.: Made in America”

Best Foreign Language Film: “Elle”

Best Cinematography: “La La Land”

Best Costume Design: “Jackie”

Best Makeup and Hairstyling: “Jackie”

Best Film Editing: “La La Land”

Best Original Score: “La La Land”

Best Original Song: “City of Stars,” “La La Land”

Best Production Design: “La La Land”

Best Sound Editing: “La La Land”

Best Sound Mixing: “La La Land”

Best Visual Effects: “The Jungle Book”

With all the hype surrounding it, as of right now the only other film that looks to stand a chance against “La La Land” in many of the categories is “Moonlight.”  The latter is the better film, but “La La Land” is the sort of movie Academy voters usually go for.  We’ll see when the nominations are announced on January 24.
